In the Zone
Sometimes when writing,
for a while,
I misplace myself
inside the hum of doing.
My mind, that officious bastard,
finally clocks out.
Hands keep busy.
Thoughts go fishing.
And somewhere between
the second cup and the third hour,
I completely forget to be me.

I would love to know what you thought about this piece.

Loving (and relating to) this:
ReplyDelete"I misplace myself
inside the hum of doing."
And I laughed out loud at "officious bastard." So well placed.

Love the thought of the thoughts going fishing
ReplyDeleteYou had me with the first stanza! Ah yes....losing oneself in the writing process....and the world disappears around me sometimes. LOVED calling the mind an "officious bastard".
ReplyDeleteAnd it's that loss of self that leads to fine work like this. Salute
ReplyDeleteI love how you describe the meditative state where the ego dissolves into the act of creation.🙌
ReplyDeleteGreat relatable poem.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your use of hum: the hum of doing. And getting lost in it.
ReplyDeleteI love that feeling when it happens but dammit, I don't have enough free time for it happen often enough. Well written Chris 👏
ReplyDeleteI seem to know that "Zone" ha-ha. And the same "officious bastard" plays tricks here, too. This is such an awesome poem! I'm really glad I read it. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteO how I recognize that reality you're explaining... so perfectly. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteYes, I can relate!
