Sunrise Buddy
Sunrise Buddy
My dog has never once
mistaken cruelty for intelligence.
He forgives like weather forgives ruined cities.
Meanwhile, people collect grudges,
polishing them with bitter tears.
Each morning,
he greets my aging bones
as if I invented sunlight
and personally dragged it back
for him.

Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to get our stray dog to be a dog. She's not used to any of the usual dog things that humans wish. She's also hopelessly in love with the dog that lives across the road, whose owners chase her away. She sits in our drive way, staring over at their house with sad hope!

Such unconditional love from both sides! Love it.
ReplyDeleteGah. This is simply stunning, Christopher. Especially that last stanza. Whew. Going back for another read. My own 15-year-old soul-dog Kiera by my side.
