Her First Sparkler
HER FIRST SPARKLER
In her hand,
the sparkler burns bright—
a trembling star she owns for breathless moments.
Light dances in her eyes,
half wonder, half warning.
The night leans close,
listening to crackling laughter—
the sound of courage
learning how to shine,
and not be burned.

A sparking quadrille, Chris! I can’t remember my first sparklet, it was such a long time ago. I love the line ‘a trembling star she owns for breathless moments’, and the thought of ‘the sound of courage learning how to shine’.
ReplyDeleteLove that line about a trembling star!
ReplyDeleteYou captured the moment of a child 's first sparkler perfectly 💞
ReplyDeleteChris, the stanzas work separately and together. Especially like the 2nd stanza, where we are all taking baby steps.
ReplyDeleteA trembling star holds wonder even if it is for a short time. - Truedessa
ReplyDeleteI recognise that courage.
ReplyDeletelearning how to shine,
ReplyDeleteand not be burned.
That is the struggle. I have been dealing with my entire life. Thank you for this poem.
Not to be burned, yes that is what's important
ReplyDeleteYou capture that magic of holding that first sparkler beautifully, Chris.
