Why is That Flamingo Blue?

One sunny morning, a flamingo named Fred woke,
Said good morning to his mom, then wanted to choke!

He stared at his reflection, horrified at the view!
He had gone to bed pink, but now he was all blue!

He flapped his blue wings with a puzzled blue frown,
“Why am I the only blue, in this pink-feathered town?”

He went down to the marsh, the flock was standing around.
The other flamingos gaped and stared, no one made a sound,

Until one pink bird laughed and pointed, made fun of his hue.
Fred heard a voice from an elder, who was angry, he knew,

“Can someone please tell me - why is that flamingo blue?”
But Fred wasn't going to be afraid, he knew just what to do.

He did a long legged strut, getting ready to be brave,
While the other flamingos teased, he began to rave.

“I’m blue, it’s true, but that’s really not so bad,
Just because I’m blue doesn’t mean I have to be sad!”

The ducks made a splash, then they followed Fred’s lead,
They quacked, they danced, shook the cattails off the reeds.

Fred paraded ‘round the pond singing, soon he forgot he was blue,
Then the pinks and blue Fred danced with joy at something new!

They played “Toss the Frog” in the tall, green marsh grass,
But Fred won every round, he caught every one, he was so fast.

“Being blue is the coolest!” he shouted with real glee,
“You can be pink, I can be blue,  just be you, you see!”

Then came a summer storm, the skies darkened gray,
The river was quickly rising, oh, what a very busy day!

The pinks weren't sure if they should stay here or not,
But Blue Fred took a deep breath and said, “Let’s give it a shot!”

He gathered the flock together, in groups of threes and twos,
“Let’s build a raft, then if the marsh floods we’ll be able to choose!”

With teamwork and laughter, they crafted, with flamingo care,
A strong raft of reeds to take them safely elsewhere.

The rain came down and the river rose, but they didn’t despair,
Blue Fred perched right up front, singing without a care!

They floated over the bank of the river, past bushes and trees,
He had them all sing along to stop the knocking of their knees.

They waited until the storm had passed, and a bright rainbow appeared,
The flock of flamingos loudly cheered, their worries were now all cleared.

“Thanks to our blue friend Fred, who sang for us all the way,
And showed us that just being different can help to save the day!”

So if you feel down, or terribly sad, or even outright blue;
You're supposed to be different, show your own special hue.

Remember Fred the blue flamingo, who shone bright like a star,
Be proud of yourself, you are perfect, just the way you are!
