PERSEVERANCE
Between sirens and sidewalks,
up through concrete cracks
a dandelion teaches algebra:
pressure plus patience equals bloom.
Roots read the fault lines,
drink the rust that flows,
and rewrite the city.
If a flower can split stone
to achieve its goals,
so can you.

I would love to know what you thought about this piece.

I love dandelions – and their algebra: ‘pressure plus patience equals bloom’! This is such a good philosophy, Chris:

Oh, MY. I am swooning over “a dandelion teaches algebra.” YES. Perfection.
ReplyDeleteDe
And the line “and rewrite the city.” So much power in those hopeful petals. Love it.
DeleteLuv what your dandelion is doing
ReplyDeleteMuch love
So powerful. "Pressure plus patience equals bloom." Whether you meant it or not, I see this metaphorically to what is happening in Minneapolis and across the US now....if a flower can split stone and achieve its goals, so can millions of people demonstarting and saying ICE and this administration are wrong. We must have the patience to keep speaking out but, at the same time, waiting for November elections to cause change. Sadly, my coment here, shows how inundated my brain is with current news.
ReplyDeleteNature teaches us, again and again. Beautiful poem of encouragement and resistance, Chris.
ReplyDeleteDandelions and algebra? I never would have put the two together. It's brilliant! "Pressure plus patience equals bloom" - Nice! Love the "you can too" ending. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteCouldn't be more positive. Just what we're needing. Thanks
ReplyDeletemy dandelions are still learning their multiplication tables (buried deep under the snow). looking forward to algebra :)
ReplyDeleteLove this poem. Great write.
ReplyDeleteWhat they said; this quadrille is positively well said. Lots to admire in a dandelion, they are more than a pretty face.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is really encouraging!
ReplyDeleteExcellent piece and great mottos. Bravo
ReplyDeleteI particularly love the way you've described this phenomenon in your first two verses. Then the piece of wisdom in conclusion is well said too.
ReplyDeleteI love the sentiment in this verse Chris 🙌
