HOLIDAY MEAL

In the hush

before the meal,

the air thickens—herbs, warmth,

a slow confession of the bird.

Outside,

frost whirls on the windows,

and trees stand witness

to our small gratitude—

how scent alone can summon

a memory of hands,

and hunger,

tender as prayer.

  1. Whew. Stunning. I love this so much. Especially this aromatic ending:
    how scent alone can summon
    a memory of hands,
    and hunger,
    tender as prayer.
