Hollow Power
HOLLOW POWER
We chase a gleam of home through thorny night,
each step a pact with want dressed up as right.
A hollow crown declares our fears are small,
yet strings inside the sham king pull us all.
We gift our wounds to strangers made of tin,
for hearts denied will gamble hurt, to win.
We oil the rust of courage bought on loan,
though trembling hands confess we stand alone.
A false green god reflects what we believe--
we unmask our needing, we learn to grieve.

I love where you took the world of Oz... and indeed that false green God we have learned too well
ReplyDeleteLike Bjorn above, I really appreciated the allegorical use of The Wizard of Oz story and how you juxtaposed current times upon it. It built like a slow burn. I became certain of the reference when I got to "strangers made of tin", so I went back and re-read two or three times to appreciate how deftly you wove all of this together, starting with chasing a glean of home. The line, "hearts denied will gamble hurt, to win" is so apropos of how we got here. Very well done. Masterful.
