The Dive Bar

Whiskey whispers tales over ice, or shot down straight
While you argue loudly over the details of the big game.
We gather here to raise a beer, laugh some with our mates,
Welcome indeed is the place where they all know you by name.

Have a cold one, tell a tale, take a chance on rolling the dice.
Here you can shoot the breeze, or shoot some league darts.
Hungry hour means wings, pizzas, with red beans and rice
Hosting poetry or the open mic nights helps to support the arts

All down the bar, the keno players watch numbers fall,
As they shuffle betting slips, making notes for the next bet.
Any time they win, they buy karma back with a round for all,
Always stacking chips up for beers they haven’t had yet.

Like family you always see, again, day in and day out,
Lots of times we squabble, argue, bitch, and debate.
Lastly, if someone outside gives us reason to show no doubt
Let us now rumble, each of us are family, we’ll participate.

  1. Love the gathering & feeling of kinship in the bar. That last stanza really stood out for me. You go the form and rhythm. Thanks for joining in.

  2. Very nicely done, Chris, an atmospheric Trolaan, and I love the idea of poets shooting pool at the DVerse Poets Pub. I particularly like the alliterative phrase ‘whiskey whispers tales over ice’, the invitation to ‘Have a cold one, tell a tale, take a chance on rolling the dice’, and ‘Hosting poetry or the open mic nights help to support the arts’. The final stanza made me think of the television series ‘Cheers’.

  6. Very well done. When I was younger, I always found it romantic to have your name known at a bar but I became an at home drinker most of the time. My name became known outside of bars (not for alcohol related reasons) and that was even better.
