Impartial Sand

IMPARTIAL SAND

How democratic is a stretch of beach?

Yesterday, a respectable married couple
slept on the same spot
where a murderer had once lain. Before that
a couple living in sin caught some sun there.

Tomorrow, it may be a priest,
or a poet, each enjoying the illusion
that this bit of ground
is theirs alone.

  4. That’s the thing about sand, you never know where it’s been.😉

  5. I agree with Melissa, you never know where sand has been. However, it does shift with time and tide, which brings up even more possibilities.

  6. Well, for certain you have me pondering what may have preceded me on all the hundreds and hundreds of beaches I have walked in 83 years !! I enjoyed this, bunches.

  7. Fantastic poem, Chris! We definitely do not own any part of nature, no matter how much our egos would like to think we do.
