Questions for a Conflagration

Teach me, I dare you.

Show me how a log
becomes carbon ebony
hard and ridged,
a statue of desiccation.

How do you make sap
run like honeyed blood?
How do you make leaves
surrender?

What is it like making bone
into black and empty
broken pipes?

Does it have taste?
Or weight?

Why do songbirds
have to die,
or do broken songs
of surrender
always sound
the crackle?

You are the teacher.
Your name is Fire.

I will take your lessons to heart.
My name is Fury.

  2. This poem really speaks to me....the dead songbirds, the questions. I love "You are the teacher. Your name is Fire." Nature is teaching us - at least those of us who are paying attention. Well said.
