Fatherly Advice

He found them at the kitchen table, evening light pooling honey around their doubts.

“My darling child,” he said softly, “the world will arrive dressed as destiny. Listen—but don’t kneel. You are not a harbor for every storm. You are the cathedral and bell; do not let anyone reduce you to echo.”

He smiled, remembering his own collisions with starlight. “Fireworks speak, but they are a kind of goodbye written in sparks. The sky keeps none of them. Lips forget what they have kissed. That isn't bitterness—it’s weather. Don't mistake warmth for foundation.”

“Guard your yes; it’s a jewel. Let your no be a lighthouse. Love is a garden—if they don’t water it, don’t blame the roses.”

He touched their forehead to his. “Be kind. Be fierce. Be entirely yourself. And when the world names you, smile—because you already know your own name.”

This bit of Prosery contains the line "Lips forget what they have kissed." by the great Toni Morrison from Eve Remembering. As always, I was kissed by inspiration over at DVerse Poets Pub.

  2. I love the phrase ‘evening light pooling honey around their doubts’, Chris, and the gentle way the father gives his daughter sound advice, especially: ‘Fireworks speak, but they are a kind of goodbye written in sparks. The sky keeps none of them.’

  3. A stunning piece of prose. I like the delivery of the father's profound advice through metaphors. Especially love ..."“Guard your yes; it’s a jewel. Let your no be a lighthouse. ""
