THE GLASS BETWEEN US
The first drink is a quiet knock on the door—polite, almost shy—Dr. Jekyll loosening his tie as warmth slips into his bloodstream. The world softens at the edges, colors blooming like watercolor on wet paper. His laughter grows rounder, his smile easier, as though someone has turned up the dimmer switch on his soul.
But the second drink is bolder, a shifting of shadows. Something prowls behind his eyes, stretching its limbs like a creature waking from long sleep. His words grow louder, sloppier, dripping from his tongue like paint flung from a careless brush.
By the third, Mr. Hyde arrives grinning, swaggering into the room with all the grace of a storm cracking open the night. His confidence swells, untethered and electric, but so does the danger—each sip blurring the line between man and monster until even he can’t tell who’s holding the glass.
—--
First sip wakes Jekyll,
shadows stir with each warm pour—
Hyde drinks the night down.

I’ve seen that kind of transformation first hand, Chris, and it’s one of the reasons I don’t drink. I love that line ‘Hyde drinks the night down’. Nicely done!

Excellent characterization of a uncorked Hyde. It's one reason I can't stand drunks.
ReplyDeleteYou have personified well what I have observed with dread on many an occasion. Well crafted!
ReplyDeleteI love this! Excellent!
ReplyDeleteThe chilling transformation that is all too common... no special potion needed, it is available around the corner.
ReplyDeleteIt is a chilling transformation, it is not a nice one to see, well written.
