The Note
Arthur Sarnoff - Man Reading Note in Candlelight (1954) |
The Note
I simply could not bring myself to cry,
no matter how hard I swore to try.
I felt that our love was cold and dead.
The twilight she gave me this note
with some words she had written to me,
and I swear this is what she said,
she said...
Love of my life, on our first eve together
we walked under the stars and talked forever.
Love of my life, your bright, carefree way
showed me the promise of each new day.
But love of my life -
when you told me today
that my place was gone
in your bright, carefree way
I understood...
She said love of my life now I can truly see
your carefree path was not meant for me.
This ache I feel you cannot understand -
thinking it was like fire, you pull away your hand.
But love of my life -
when you told me today
that my place was gone
in your quick, carefree way
I understood...
She said...
Love of my life your smile was never shy
enticing mine when I wanted to cry.
In your quicksilver laugh I came to believe
And so I sang as I watched you leave.
But love of my life -
when you told me today
that my place was gone
in your quick, carefree way
I understood...
I understood...
Oh truly did she understand, and so did I.
For then, just then, it occurred to me;
the love of my life was none but she.
And only then did I begin to cry.

Heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteThis is raw and beautiful it its honesty of two people separating.
ReplyDeleteMy first time here I think Christopher and I like your style - there is a confidence, a bit of a swagger, an openness and a lyricality to it - I shall be back for more... scotthastie.com
