Blessings of Kwanzaa

Blessings of Kwanzaa

I was today years old, I learned
the joy in your holiday, deeply touched.
Plates piled high with food, bright smiles;
to create, to unite, living in faith,
purpose, family, end of year at home.
Your welcome to me fills my heart
as laughs and stories fill my soul.

This poem is a Kwansaba, a poem of praise in celebration of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa is a 7 day celebration of the African-American family encompassing African-American heritage, culture and principles. The celebration was introduced by Dr. Maulana Karenga, African-American educator, following the Watts riots of 1966 with the intent of bringing the African American community together. The 7 principles of Kwanzaa are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Each day of the celebration focuses on one of the principles.

All the blessings of this season to those who celebrate this wonderful holiday!

As you may have guessed, this poem is the last prompt of 2021 from those seasonal sweethearts over at DVerse.
